Around ARDNAMURCHAN POINT

The most westerly headland on the British mainland, Ardnamurchan Point has something of a reputation, marking a departure from the sheltered anchorages to the south for small vessels, and a place for kayakers to choose their day with care. There may not be the wild exposure of the far north but still, it is a dramatic coastline, and one which offers a grandstand view of the Small Isles, perfect beaches and on this occasion, close encounters with two basking sharks and a sea eagle, none of which I managed to photograph.

The sunset was pretty wild too, and lasted an age, evening showers clearing across the Rum Cuillin leaving layers of cloud lit from below, turning through pastel shades to gold and brilliant red. Camped above a tiny beach on the north coast, I watched for what seemed hours, before turning in, following the rugged coastline inland the next day, and finally biking back across the headland, to complete the round trip of Ardnamurchan Point.
