RUBHA COIGACH

For the climber, Rubha Coigach offers some of the best single pitch routes anywhere. A bold statement but having climbed on all of the principle cliffs here, one I’d happily hold up for scrutiny - the moves on routes such as Batman (HVS 5a) and Cyclops (E2 5b) remain as clear in my mind today as they were when I first climbed them nearly two decades ago. For the sea kayaker, Rubha Coigach is no less significant, giving one of the finest day trips on the north west coast, and if conditions are calm enough, a chance to inspect those routes climbed previously, from an alternative perspective. If the sea is not so calm, well then all manner of entertainment is likely, including some surf to play in or simply survive, depending on your point of view, at the end. Regardless, it is a place I have been returning to for more years than I care to remember, and look forward to keenly on each occasion. Perhaps next time I will run around the headland, or simply spend a while sitting in contemplation. The only occasion I have seen a whale from the shore was here, doing just that.
