UP THE CREEK

An unlikely destination for the sea kayaker, the Ravenglass estuary offers a surprisingly entertaining day out in the right conditions.

The ideal we found, was to pick a day of high winds, play in the surf for a while, before taking the flood tide up the river and seeing how far it was possible to get.

Quite a long way as it happens.

If you time things just right, the tide can be followed in both directions. If not, it’s a slog and will require more than a little patience negotiating the shallows, mud flats and meandering turns of the lower channel.

The sunsets are often quite special too.
