ALL CLEAR TO CAPE WRATH
Arkle, from the Norse 'ark fjell', means flat topped. Flat topped it may be, but along with Fionaven, these summits offer some of the roughest ground on any of the Scottish hills. The traverse of both is a tough day, likely to leave fell shoes if not feet in tatters.
High and lonely lochans are overshadowed by towering cliffs and the vast sweep of quartz screes. It is raw, uncompromising landscape.
On the final approach to the summit, a level causeway precedes the last short climb after which the view north is clear to Cape Wrath.
I spent longer than I should have on the top, sat in the small hollow beneath the summit cairn, soaking in the sun and long views to the Summer Isles, across the mountains of Coigach and Assynt and to the north, the surf at Sandwood Bay clearly visible even from here.
